What is dropshipping? A plain guide for 2026

How dropshipping works, what it costs to start, whether it is still worth it, and the steps to launch your first product.

Dropshipping in one paragraph

Dropshipping is a way to sell products online without holding stock. You list a product in your store. When a customer orders, you buy that item from a supplier, and the supplier ships it straight to the customer. Your profit is the gap between what the customer paid and what the product, shipping, fees, and advertising cost you.

How dropshipping works, step by step

  1. You choose a product and a supplier who will ship single orders.
  2. You list it in your store, usually on Shopify, at your own price.
  3. You bring in visitors, most often with video ads on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok.
  4. A customer orders and pays you.
  5. You pay the supplier, who packs and ships the order to the customer.
  6. You handle support: questions, tracking, and returns.

What it costs to start

You do not buy inventory, but dropshipping is not free. Expect to pay for a store plan, a domain name, and above all advertising. Most of the money beginners lose goes on ads for products that were never going to work. A fair first test of one product is about three ads with a spending limit on each. See how much to spend testing a product, or size it with the ad test budget calculator.

Pros and cons

AdvantagesDrawbacks
No stock to buy up frontThin margins once ads are counted
Test many products cheaplyYou do not control shipping speed or quality
Run it from anywhereEasy for others to copy your product
Add or drop products in minutesAd accounts can be restricted for risky products

Is dropshipping still worth it in 2026?

It can be, but it is harder than it was. Ads cost more and customers expect faster delivery. The sellers who do well pick fewer products and check each one first: is demand rising, how many others already sell it, and does the margin survive a realistic ad cost? That check is what a Go / No-Go score is for.

Is dropshipping legal in the United States?

Yes. Dropshipping is a normal way of fulfilling orders. You are still the seller, so the usual rules apply to you: register your business where required, collect sales tax where you owe it, describe products truthfully, honour your refund policy, and do not sell counterfeit or trademarked goods. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

How to start dropshipping in six steps

  1. Pick a product on evidence. Follow a repeatable product research method.
  2. Choose a supplier on landed cost and delivery time, not product price. Why landed cost matters.
  3. Do the margin math with the profit margin calculator.
  4. Build a product page that explains the problem, the product, and the offer.
  5. Make two or three short video ads with different hooks. How UGC video ads are built.
  6. Set a kill line and a scale line before spending. When to kill an ad.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Choosing a product because it went viral last week
  • Comparing suppliers on product price alone
  • Building a full store before checking one product
  • Letting a losing ad run "one more day"
  • Selling items with health claims or trademark lookalikes

Words you will hear

  • Landed cost: product cost plus shipping to your customer.
  • ROAS: return on ad spend, revenue divided by ad spend. Try the ROAS calculator.
  • Break-even ROAS: the ROAS at which ads use up all your profit.
  • UGC: user-generated content, video filmed like a customer made it.
  • Kill line: the spend at which you stop an ad that has not sold.

Questions people ask

How much money do I need to start dropshipping?

Plan for a store plan, a domain, and an ad test budget. A careful first product test is often around $100 to $150 in ads, on top of store costs.

Do I need a business license to dropship in the US?

Rules vary by state and city. Many sellers register a business and get a sales tax permit. Check your state's requirements or ask an accountant.

How long does shipping take?

It depends on the supplier and the destination. Choose suppliers on the delivery time to your customer's country, since slow delivery brings refunds.

Can I dropship without Shopify?

Yes, other store platforms work. Shopify is the most common choice and is the platform Drop2Launch publishes product pages to.

What is the best product to dropship?

There is no single best product. Look for rising demand, few advertisers, a margin that survives ad costs, and no trademark or claim risk.
