Size a first Facebook and Instagram ad test: how much to risk on each ad, the most a failed test can cost, and how long it will take.
- Kill line per ad
- Days to reach the kill line
- Total daily spend
- Break-even ROAS
- Break-even ad cost per order
Stop any ad that reaches its kill line with no sale.
How the numbers are worked out
The kill line is set at about one selling price per ad, rounded to the nearest $5: if an ad has spent that much with no sale, it is unlikely to turn profitable. The most a failed test should cost is the kill line times the number of ads.
Why test more than one ad
One video tells you about that video, not the product. Two or three different hooks at the same daily budget give a fairer answer for the same money.
What to do when an ad sells
Compare its ROAS with the break-even ROAS shown here. Above break-even, let it run. When it holds above about 2.0 for three days, raise the budget by around 20%.
How much should I spend testing a dropshipping product?
A common rule is about one selling price per ad, across two or three ads. For a $39 product that is roughly $120 in total.
How long should I run a test ad?
Until it reaches the kill line with no sale, or until it has enough sales to compare ROAS with break-even, usually three to four days.
